If you know audio gear, you know the Sennheiser HD 650. These open-back headphones have serious staying power. Praised for their richly detailed, effortlessly enjoyable sound, they remain among the most talked-about products on Head-Fi today.  Audiophile columnists were astounded by the value of the HD650. And, it is still widely considered among the best headphones under $1,000. If you are looking for an enjoyable headphone, that is pleasing to listen to after a long day at work, just get a pair of these.

The MASSDROP X SENNHEISER HD 6XX HEADPHONESreplaces the HD 650’s and is crafted with the modern audiophile in mind. The driver structure and sound signature haven’t changed a bit. You’ll get the same smooth, laid-back presentation. And, it has a balanced midrange and natural-sounding bass. The HD 650 is considered more refined and better damped than its predecessor, the HD 600, with less energy in the upper midrange (which some listeners may find less fatiguing) and an overall balance that’s a bit warmer and bassier. Its neutral response provides a pleasant listening experience with any musical genre from a range of sources. Plus, it responds well to improved sources and amplification, and headphone amplifiers of any output impedance could potentially make a good match.

These are pretty neutral headphones, a little soft on top but very nice midrange. It is great for vocal music, especially female vocalists. There is no reported “haze” in the upper octaves. However, these are definitely not for a bass-head. Jazz and classical lovers will definitely enjoy this headphone. Cymbals can be a little tizzy on top if the recording veers in that direction, but good recordings seem to be pristine. Deep bass holds up pretty well except for the levels in that first octave, where they tend to drop off a bit.

The MASSDROP X SENNHEISER HD 6XX HEADPHONES are perfectly balanced. They produce a great sense of depth, imaging, and soundstage. These will also be handy for production, professional mixing, etc… Keep in mind the frequency response is not flat, but the character of these will cater to most listeners. So, they could come in handy from a mixing/mastering perspective. They are very comfortable and I enjoy them for long gaming sessions.

Construction is made of a good quality plastic mixed with some metals. As you already know, some plastics are brittle, looking and feeling cheap; these do not. And, the ear pads and cables are replaceable which is a huge plus. They’re light with soft pads. The open grills ensure that your ears won’t burn up while listening for long periods of time. The big pads allow your ears fit inside instead of resting on the pads.  However, for someone with a larger head and ears, the structure may be too narrow and can create unnecessary pressure on the ears. Some consumers found that he material used for the pads can be irritating for the skin as well. Others complained that they can be a little tight out of the box but the metal bands running into the headband can be bent a little for increased comfort. The clamping pressure is also a bit high. With glasses, they press a little hard on the frame, creating a small level of discomfort around my ears.

This model comes in a deep midnight blue, almost black. The silver nameplates have been swapped for black plates with contrasting silver text—and the Massdrop logo is silk-screened on the inside of the headband, just above the right cup, with the serial number located just above the left cup. Based on feedback from the community, this iteration has also been updated with a detachable 6-foot cable (compared to the original’s 10-foot cable) and a ⅛-inch plug, which is more versatile for everyday laptops, phones, and DAPs than the standard ¼-inch plug. Of course, the MASSDROP X SENNHEISER HD 6XX HEADPHONES comes with a ¼-inch adapter for those who want it.

Because the MASSDROP X SENNHEISER HD 6XX HEADPHONE has an open-back design, it won’t isolate you from outside noise or prevent sound from being heard by those nearby. It may be best-suited for quieter home and office environments. Like all headphones in Sennheiser’s HD 600 line, this new model can be disassembled by hand to its component parts, all of which can be easily replaced. Many of its parts are interchangeable with others in the series, and owners of the MASSDROP X SENNHEISER HD 6XX HEADPHONES can benefit from the rich aftermarket and brain trust of modifications and gear matching—along with excellent long-term support from Sennheiser itself.

Burning in a new pair of headphones involves playing music or sound on them continuously for dozens or hundreds of hours. This is often done through loops of white noise or pink noise or sweeping tones. To burn in speakers or cans, play them at varying power levels for at least 24 hrs continuously. You can leave them at a single power level too.  And, just let them play while restraining yourself from cranking them up to full volume. The “why” behind burn-in has to do with the earphone drivers. Burn-in proponents argue that drivers become more flexible after some use, altering the sound they produce. Supposedly, the burn-in period improves the headphone sound. At least the burning in has them arriving at the sound they will deliver for the rest of their life. Some audiophiles swear that all headphones should be burned in. Others have doubts whether it make a difference to the sound. It is up to you to decide if your headphones need to be burned in.
